Goodwood Sectionals Aug 2nd

After enjoying an evening's rest, subsequent to a reasonably successful Glorious Goodwood, sectionals for the final day will be reviewed. TurfTrax have provided just three races to work with from Saturday, although they did belatedly publish a fourth race from Friday's action.

Jaguar Stakes (Class 2)

A 12 furlong handicap for 3 year olds.

Final Percentages and Energy Distribution

1 Double Bluff 109.679 2 0.780 2

4 Oasis Fantasy 108.103 5 0.813 5
5 Fun Mac 108.089 6 0.815 6

7 Karraar 104.928 8 0.877 8
8 Master Of Finance 104.617 9 0.886 9
9 Black Shadow 105.563 7 0.872 7
10 Galactic Heroine 102.668 10 0.932 10
11 Pack Leader 101.397 11 0.964 11
12 Norse Star 100.200 12 0.995 12

Double Bluff obviously ran very well, but the standout performance from the graph and numbers is that of King's Fete. This horse posted a final percentage almost a full point clear of the second highest number, that of the winner. Adventure Seeker appears to have run better than his placing would warrant, but nonetheless, his numbers are still some way behind the first three horses.

Markel Insurance Nassau Stakes (Group 1)

An almost 10f race for fillies and mares, 3 years old and older. The 10f races at Goodwood are actually 8 yards shorter.

Final Percentages and Energy Distribution

          Horse FinPercent FinRank EnergyDist EnergyRank
1 Sultanina 107.636 1 0.813 1
2 Narniyn 106.986 2 0.827 2
3 Venus de Milo 105.664 4 0.852 4
4 Eastern Belle 106.267 3 0.846 3
5 Lustrous 105.152 5 0.868 5
6 Mango Diva 101.428 6 0.960 6

The most interesting aspect of this race is Eastern Belle's graph. While her numbers are slightly ahead of her eventual fourth placing, her graph line is ragged. After a slow start, she caught up, then she appeared to slow heading up the hill at the 7f point, then accelerate between 6f and 5f from the winning post. Later, just prior to 3f before the end, she put in another short burst, but slowed markedly almost immediately.

A second viewing of this race would certainly assist in untangling Eastern Belle's run. Fortunately, that is possible. As the Nassau was a feature race of the day, RacingUK have uploaded the full replay to YouTube. In short, she was just outpaced and slightly outclassed at Group 1 level. She has won a Listed event, and may be better in a Group 2 or Group 3 next time out.

Natwest EBF Stallions Maiden Stakes (Class 2)

A 7 furlong race for 2 year old colts and geldings.

10 Heatstroke 95.453 10 1.141 10

The winner, Dutch Connection managed to sustain his final run for longer than his rivals, but there are two other interesting horses in this race. Dance of Fire is an obvious one, with both the highest final percentages and top ranking for energy distribution. However, Silver Quay is also worth noting. He started his run much earlier than many others, at the 4 furlong mark and managed to sustain it reasonably well, for between 2 and 3 furlongs, finally slowing sharply in the final furlong. Additional fitness and maturity could benefit this horse later in the season.

This is the final sectional review from Glorious Goodwood, 2014. As further sectional data from subsequent meetings is publically made available, new reviews will be conducted.
